Starring of a Text

When reading a story or watching a film often times the message, depth of the content is lost. It’s not a difficult thing to miss the true meaning when one is focusing on the surface of the plot, characters and spectacular movie effects. These elements of the film are indeed entertaining and become the main reason why we take any interest in a film or piece of literature. This changes when one looks to a starred text however. According to Barthes stars texts in hopes to create a non-prejudicial reading for readers. A starred text brings out what’s significant in passages disregarding narration and format. The commentary is not attempting to retain the original narratorial flow of the text, but is instead attempting to “manhandle the text, interrupt it” (S/Z, 15) so hidden connections can be seen by the readers. Through this project, I attempted to star a passage from the script of The Matrix in order to reveal the deep meanings of the film and the many connections between different meanings. I starred the text with a structure resembling that of Hypertext, using links and disorder.
